Welcome!
National Police Week
"National Police Week" was enacted October 1, 1962 in the Congress of the United States. This resolution authorized the President of the United States, then John F. Kennedy, in 1963, to proclaim May 15th. of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week of each year during which May 15th. occurs as Police Week. The preceding week is "Correctional Officers" week. Each year people across the country gather during the week to honor those who serve their communities through law enforcement and to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. In 2007, 189 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty.
National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was dedicated in 1991 by President George Bush. It honors all of America's federal, state and local law enforcers. Inscribed on the Memorial's blue-gray marble walls are the names of more than 17,000 officers who have been killed in the line of duty, dating back to the first known death in 1792. |
